CD 7 - Cattle Drive Visions Part 7 - “Cattle Country”
In this day and age when there are more cattle then people in the state of Nebraska, and the cattle industry leads the way in the muscular agricultural economy, its hard to realize that there was a time when there were almost no cattle in the state.

The growth of the cattle industry in Nebraska is an exciting story about men with a true vision who were determined to prove that cattle ranching could be a big part of our future. They were right, and they transformed the Great American Desert into gigantic ranches that sprawled over hundreds of squares miles.

This story has all the elements of a great Western tale with cattle drives, thrilling round-ups, and the cattle barons battling with the homesteaders, the weather and each other. It’s also the story of how the dark and forbidding Sandhills, that scared the ranchers to death, were transformed into the greatest of all the cattle ranges in the world.

The Western Cowboy, with his face tanned like fine leather from the burning sun, and a hungry gleam in his eye, stands out as one of the great stories of the American West. The cowboy has been given an image of almost biblical proportions. This image is made even more remarkable, because most of the stories happen to be true.
